Highland Brewing Founder and Godfather of Asheville Craft Beer Oscar P. Wong Has Passed Away

Some really sad news from Highland Brewing in Asheville, NC:

With heavy hearts, we share the news of the passing of our beloved founder, Oscar P. Wong, lovingly known as the “Godfather of Asheville Craft Beer.”

With Anna, his wife of over 57 years, and Leah, one of his two daughters, at his side, Oscar passed peacefully at home on Sunday, May 25, 2025.

Upon his cancer diagnosis, his doctor gave him 6-12 months, yet he lived well for the better part of three years. He liked to say, “Personal relationships are the currency of life.” 

We honor and celebrate Oscar’s remarkable life as a trailblazer, mentor, and friend to so many. His legacy is woven into the vibrant fabric of every community he touched.

Oscar was a brilliant engineer-turned-entrepreneur who always embodied generosity, humility, and above all else, connection. Oscar had a gift for making people feel seen and valued and often Oscar reminded us that success is not just about achievement but about giving back. 

Throughout his lifetime Oscar was honored with countless awards, among them: the US Small Business Administration’s “Person of the Year” for NC; the Order of the Long Leaf Pine, North Carolina’s highest civilian award; and the Brewers Association’s Recognition Award for “individuals whose inspiration, enthusiasm, and support have contributed to the craft brewing movement.”  

Oscar’s real legacy lies in the lives he touched—as a loving father and friend, a role model for employees, a humorous and inspirational figure in the community, and a kind soul who believed in building businesses and bonds. 

So, let’s all raise a Highland favorite (his was Oatmeal Porter) for a life lived with meaning and care. Rest easy, Oscar. Your spirit continues to inspire
