About Chimay:
Chimay is a Belgian brewery located at Scourmont Abbey, a Trappist monastery, known for its Trappist beers and cheeses. The brewery produces four main ales: Chimay Red, Chimay Blue, Chimay White, and Chimay 150, as well as a patersbier for the monks. The monastery also produces four varieties of cheese, including a beer cheese.
Chimay Brewery and its products:
Trappist Brewery:
Chimay is one of the few breweries worldwide that are officially recognized as Trappist breweries, meaning the beer is brewed within the walls of the monastery under the supervision of monks.
Beers:
Chimay produces a range of ales, each with its own unique character. Chimay Red (Dubbel) is the original, first brewed in 1862, known for its fruity, malty, and slightly spicy notes. Chimay Blue (Grand Réserve) is a strong dark ale, often aged, with a rich, complex flavor. Chimay White (Triple) is a golden ale, hoppy and refreshing. Chimay 150 is a strong, golden ale, released to celebrate the 150th anniversary of the brewery.
Cheeses:
Chimay’s cheese production is also well-regarded, with the monks producing a range of cheese varieties, including a beer cheese that incorporates Chimay Bleue beer.
Sustainability:
Chimay is known for its sustainable practices, including the use of wind turbines and solar panels, and the recycling of beer mash as feed for the cows that produce milk for their cheese.
Beyond the products:
Scourmont Abbey:
The brewery is part of Scourmont Abbey, a Trappist monastery where monks live a life dedicated to prayer and manual work, including brewing beer and producing cheese.
Charitable Donations:
A significant portion of the revenue from Chimay’s beer and cheese sales is donated to charitable causes.
Local Community:
Chimay’s activities have also supported the local community, creating jobs and contributing to the region’s economy.
