I can’t believe it’s over 10-years now that I first tasted the imperial stout that today’s beer is based on. The year was 2009 and the beer was called Black Tuesday from The Bruery In Placentia, CA. This Bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout literally set the standard for what a BA imperial stout should be and it became the precursor to literally thousands of barrel-aged stouts to follow.

Today we’re sampling So Happens It’s Tuesday and it is also a Bourbon barrel-aged imperial stout, however this beer has what the Bruery calls a “more approachable” AbV of 15.3%-AbV compared to the 19%-AbV of the original Black Tuesday. So Happens It’s Tuesday will also be packaged in a more approachable 16oz can rather than the 750ml bottles of Black Tuesday.

This beer is a result of 12-years of experience with barrel aging at The Bruery, and as they put it, “The Bruery’s barrel program is one of the country’s finest. Of course you know I’m already 100% ready to sample it…so off we go…

Style:  Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout

Appearance:  Deep black/brown
Aroma:   Bourbon, vanilla, oak, caramel and molasses
Mouthfeel:   Robust and light carbonation
Taste:   Vanilla, Bourbon, Molasses, caramel, figs, boozy and dark chocolate
Overall:  So Happens It’s Tuesday has to be one of my favorite big barrel-aged imperial stouts. The beer is robust and complex with a depth and character that’s hard to describe. The mouthfeel and finish make you want another sip and the satisfying flavors of chocolate, Bourbon, vanilla and molasses make for a flavorful imperial stout. Overall this beer sets a really high bar for other barrel-aged imperial stouts to follow, and I think it is one of the better examples you will find.
