Surly Barrel Aged Darkness 2027

We just finished Darkness Day 2026, and Surly Brewing is already giving stout fans something else to talk about. The first look at Surly Barrel Aged Darkness 2027 is here, and the label makes one thing pretty clear: the next version of this iconic Minnesota stout is going big again.

Surly Barrel Aged Darkness 2027 will remain a barrel-aged imperial stout, giving the already massive Darkness recipe another layer of character before it reaches drinkers. The beer is listed at 12% ABV, putting it firmly in the high-gravity category that Surly Darkness fans have come to expect from one of the brewery’s most recognizable releases.

And yes, the artwork is fantastic.

The 2027 label features another grim, skeletal figure holding what appears to be a goblet or snifter, surrounded by bats, skulls, a huge yellow moon and an almost comic-book-style storm of black, white and yellow imagery. It has that old-school Darkness attitude without looking like a simple repeat of previous years. The artwork is credited to Adam Turman, whose connection to Surly Darkness goes all the way back to the brewery’s early years.

It is coming in Fall 2027..

The biggest packaging detail here is worth pointing out because the label itself creates a little confusion. The side panel says “BREWED AND CANNED BY SURLY BREWING CO.”, but the package shown is clearly a 750ml bottle, and the label actually lists the volume as “1 PNT. 9.4 FL. OZ. 750ML.” So for collectors and anyone tracking the different Surly Darkness formats, this is the barrel-aged 2027 bottle rather than a standard 16-ounce can.

That 750ml format also makes sense for a beer like Surly Barrel Aged Darkness 2027. Barrel-aged imperial stouts are often treated differently from everyday packaged beer, with the larger bottle format fitting the idea of a beer that people may open with friends, share over several pours, or tuck away for later. A 12% ABV stout with barrel aging is exactly the kind of beer that gets attention from serious stout drinkers and collectors.

The label also identifies the beer as 2027 Barrel-Aged Imperial Stout, leaving little doubt about what Surly has planned. This is not a lighter Darkness variant or some completely different seasonal release. It is another high-gravity entry in the Darkness family, and the barrel-aging component gives this version its own identity…and stay tuned for more details on the specific barrels to be used.

For longtime Surly fans, that is the interesting part. Darkness has been one of the brewery’s defining beers for years, and the annual packaging, artwork and Darkness Day celebration have become nearly as recognizable as the stout itself. MyBeerBuzz has followed the series for years, from earlier Darkness releases and bottle artwork to recent barrel-aged versions and the annual Darkness Day events.

Surly Darkness Day 2027 should eventually provide the bigger picture, including the release date, availability, bottle packages, possible variants and whatever else Surly has planned. At this point, those details are still ahead of us, so I am not going to pretend they have been announced.

For now, the important details are sitting right there on the label: Surly Barrel Aged Darkness 2027, 12% ABV, imperial stout, barrel-aged and packaged in a 750ml bottle.

That is enough to get the conversation started.

And if Surly follows the usual Darkness Day pattern, there will be plenty more to come once the brewery starts rolling out the official 2027 information.

Surly Brewing Co. has built a reputation in Minnesota and well beyond Minnesota by refusing to approach craft beer like a routine manufacturing business. The brewery’s story started in 2006, when Omar Ansari founded Surly Brewing in a corner of his parents’ small abrasives factory in Brooklyn Center, Minnesota. The goal was pretty direct: make the kind of beer that serious craft beer drinkers wanted to drink and create a place where those drinkers could eventually gather. That simple idea grew into one of Minnesota’s most recognizable craft breweries, with Surly Darkness becoming one of its most closely followed beers.

The move to Minneapolis in 2014 changed the scale of Surly Brewing. After outgrowing the original Brooklyn Center operation, Surly opened its much larger Minneapolis brewery on December 19, 2014. The brewery and beer hall quickly became a destination, giving Surly a physical gathering place that matched the personality of the beers. Today, the Minneapolis location remains a major part of the Surly experience, with a beer hall, beer garden, restaurant and event spaces that bring together local drinkers, travelers, beer collectors and fans of the brewery’s often unconventional releases.

Surly Darkness sits near the center of that history. The imperial stout has developed a loyal following because it is not a beer that tries to disappear into the background. Darkness is big, dark and built for drinkers who like substantial stout character, and the annual Darkness Day celebration has grown into an important event on the American craft beer calendar. What began as a gathering of dedicated Surly fans eventually became a much larger celebration involving beer releases, music, collaborations, variants, vintage bottles and the kind of atmosphere that makes Darkness Day different from a normal brewery release.

The brewery has also continued to experiment around the Darkness brand rather than simply releasing the same beer in the same package every year. Recent Surly Darkness programs have included different bottle formats, special variants, collaborations and barrel-aged versions. The 2025 program, for example, included multiple Darkness packages and a collaboration with August Schell Brewing Company, while the 2026 program brought another major packaging reveal and a return to Adam Turman’s artwork for Surly’s 20th anniversary celebration.

Barrel aging is another important part of Surly’s broader specialty-beer program. The brewery has produced barrel-aged beers outside the Darkness lineup as well, including its Bottle Project releases and barrel-aged seasonal beers. Surly has highlighted the technical side of barrel aging, including the selection of the base beer and the wood used during maturation. That experience makes a Surly Barrel Aged Darkness release particularly interesting because the brewery is taking an already powerful imperial stout and giving it additional time and character through barrel aging.

Surly’s current beer portfolio goes well beyond Darkness and includes IPAs, hazy ales, lagers, stouts, kettle sours, barrel-aged beers and newer non-alcoholic offerings. The brewery says it is currently distributed across 13 states, including Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, North Dakota, South Dakota, Illinois, Michigan, Missouri, Nebraska, Colorado, Kansas, Texas and Arizona, although availability varies by market. That reach helps explain why Surly releases can attract attention far beyond the Twin Cities.

And then there is the artwork. Surly has consistently treated Darkness packaging as part of the experience, turning each year’s label into something fans can recognize, collect and remember. With Adam Turman returning for the 2026 anniversary release and now appearing on the 2027 Barrel-Aged Darkness label shown here, Surly is continuing that tradition of connecting Minnesota craft beer with distinctive local art. The beer may disappear from the bottle eventually, but the label is designed to stick around.
