Toppling Goliath Adding Slammin’ Sue Session IPA
Toppling Goliath Slammin’ Sue Brings Big Citra Flavor to a Session IPA
Toppling Goliath Brewing Company is adding another Sue to its ever-growing lineup, but this time the Decorah, Iowa brewery is taking things in a decidedly more sessionable direction. Slammin’ Sue is a new Session India Pale Ale built around Citra hops and designed to deliver plenty of hop character without the higher alcohol level found in many modern IPAs.
According to the new can, Slammin’ Sue clocks in at just 4.1% ABV, making this one of the more approachable IPA-style offerings from Toppling Goliath. The brewery says the beer features the “unmistakable bright citrus and tropical character” of Citra hops and is brewed for maximum drinkability, full of flavor and easy to slam.
The new Toppling Goliath Slammin’ Sue Session IPA will be packaged in 12-ounce cans, with artwork that continues the brewery’s instantly recognizable Sue and dinosaur theme. The colorful package features a fierce, stylized dinosaur charging across the label, while the can identifies Slammin’ Sue as a Session India Pale Ale. Release timing and distribution details are still to come, but this looks like a particularly interesting addition to the Toppling Goliath IPA lineup.

A New Session IPA From Toppling Goliath
The Slammin’ Sue Session IPA is an intriguing change of pace for Toppling Goliath Brewing. While the brewery has built an enormous reputation around intensely hop-forward beers, including Pseudo Sue, King Sue, and numerous Double IPAs, Slammin’ Sue takes the familiar Sue concept and brings it down to a highly drinkable 4.1% ABV.
The centerpiece is Citra hops, one of the most recognizable modern American hop varieties. The Slammin’ Sue label specifically highlights bright citrus and tropical character, suggesting a beer focused on hop aroma and flavor rather than simply piling on alcohol.
That distinction is important. A session IPA has to deliver enough hop expression and body to remain satisfying while keeping the alcohol level low enough for repeated pours. At 4.1% ABV, Slammin’ Sue has the potential to fill that role nicely, particularly for drinkers looking for a flavorful craft IPA that can fit into a longer drinking session.
The label also makes an important point about the beer’s presentation: Slammin’ Sue is unfiltered, and sediment is normal. That means drinkers may encounter some natural haze or sediment in the finished beer, something that fits comfortably within the modern hop-forward brewing tradition.
The new 12-ounce cans also make sense for a beer designed around maximum drinkability. Rather than a large-format can or a high-ABV Double IPA, Slammin’ Sue appears designed to be an easy grab from the refrigerator, cooler or beer shelf.
Toppling Goliath has already demonstrated how far it can take the Sue concept. Recent releases have included Hazy Day Sue, Summer Sue, West Coast Sue, KrushMo Pseudo Sue, NA Pseudo Sue and Kung Fu Sue, showing just how flexible the brewery’s dinosaur-inspired lineup has become.
Slammin’ Sue could therefore be one of the most accessible members of that growing family.
At 4.1% ABV, bright Citra hop character, a Session IPA designation, and 12-ounce cans, this is a beer worth watching as Toppling Goliath prepares to announce its official release date and distribution details.

About Toppling Goliath Brewing Company:
Toppling Goliath Brewing Company has grown from a small homebrewing passion into one of Iowa’s most recognizable and influential craft breweries. Clark and Barbara Lewey founded Toppling Goliath in 2009 in Decorah, Iowa, beginning a brewing operation that would eventually gain an international reputation for hop-forward IPAs, barrel-aged stouts, and innovative craft beer.
The brewery’s identity has always been closely connected to bold flavors and ambitious brewing. Toppling Goliath describes itself as a brewery known for IPAs and barrel-aged stouts, and its portfolio has expanded dramatically since those early days. The brewery now distributes across more than 30 states and produces more than 40 rotating beers, according to its official history.
Among the brewery’s most recognizable beers is Pseudo Sue, the Citra-forward American pale ale that helped establish Toppling Goliath as a major name among American hop lovers. The brewery’s Sue family has subsequently expanded into numerous variations, collaborations and experimental interpretations. MyBeerBuzz coverage has followed releases including Hazy Day Sue, Summer Sue, West Coast Sue, KrushMo Pseudo Sue, NA Pseudo Sue and Kung Fu Sue.
Toppling Goliath’s reputation extends beyond pale ales and IPAs. Its barrel-aged stout program has attracted serious craft beer collectors, while beers such as Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout have become closely associated with the brewery’s national reputation. The brewery’s official history notes that Kentucky Brunch Brand Stout has held the distinction of being ranked the world’s top beer since 2015 and that Toppling Goliath was named the 2021 U.S. Open Beer Championship Grand National Champion.
The brewery’s growth has not meant abandoning its Decorah roots. Toppling Goliath remains based in the Northeast Iowa community where Clark and Barbara Lewey started the brewery, and its large taproom has become a destination for craft beer travelers. The brewery’s current home is at 1600 Prosperity Road in Decorah, where visitors can find a broad selection of Toppling Goliath beers, food, events and brewery experiences.
One of Toppling Goliath’s greatest strengths is its willingness to continually experiment. The brewery has worked with organizations and breweries including the Field Museum, Tired Hands Brewing, Fidens Brewing and Firestone Walker, producing everything from pale ales and hazy IPAs to Double IPAs, Black IPAs and specialty beers.
That spirit of experimentation makes Slammin’ Sue Session IPA a natural fit. Instead of chasing the increasingly high alcohol levels associated with some modern IPAs, Toppling Goliath is emphasizing 4.1% ABV, Citra hops, bright citrus, tropical character and maximum drinkability.
With its colorful Sue artwork, 12-ounce cans and sessionable alcohol level, Slammin’ Sue could become an especially accessible entry in the Toppling Goliath lineup. For fans of Iowa craft beer, Toppling Goliath IPA, Citra hops, Session IPA and the ever-expanding Sue family, this is definitely one to watch as release information arrives.
