The announcement that Brouwerij Alvinne is closing has sent shockwaves through the craft beer community. After 23 years of brewing innovative beers and helping shape the modern European craft beer movement, the respected Belgian brewery has confirmed that it will begin winding down operations and selling its assets. Founder Glenn Castelein described the decision as the most difficult of his career, bringing an end to one of Belgium’s most influential independent breweries.

Founded in Zwevegem, Belgium, Brouwerij Alvinne built a reputation for producing distinctive wild ales, sour beers, barrel-aged beers, and experimental craft beer releases. The brewery became particularly renowned for its unique house yeast culture, which helped define the flavor profile of many of its most sought-after beers. Over the years, Alvinne developed a loyal international following among beer enthusiasts who appreciated its bold approach to fermentation and barrel aging.

According to Castelein, the brewery endured numerous challenges throughout its history, including economic pressures, energy crises, banking difficulties, and the global COVID-19 pandemic. He also noted that an internal crisis placed significant strain on the brewery over the last six years, making long-term sustainability increasingly difficult. Despite continued efforts to navigate these obstacles, the decision was ultimately made to close the brewery and place its building, brewhouse, bottling line, foeders, and brand assets up for sale.

The closure of Brouwerij Alvinne represents more than the loss of another brewery. Alvinne played an important role in the growth of European craft beer culture. Castelein highlighted the brewery’s contributions to brewer education, craft beer festivals, beer importing, and the development of a passionate community through its Fellowship membership program. These efforts helped establish Alvinne as a respected name within both Belgian brewing and the broader international craft beer scene.

While the brewery is preparing for its final chapter, operations have not ended immediately. Alvinne still has beers maturing in barrels, additional bottlings planned, and a final Fellowship release available for supporters. The brewery also intends to participate in several upcoming beer festivals, giving fans one last opportunity to celebrate Alvinne’s legacy and enjoy its beers before the eventual closure.

For beer enthusiasts, collectors, and longtime supporters, the news serves as a reminder of Alvinne’s lasting impact on Belgian craft beer. The brewery’s unique approach to wild fermentation, sour beer production, barrel aging, and community building has left an undeniable mark on modern brewing. Even as Brouwerij Alvinne prepares to close its doors, its influence on craft beer innovation and Belgian brewing culture will continue to be felt for years to come.

After 23 unforgettable years, Brouwerij Alvinne has announced it will begin winding down operations. Founder Glenn Castelein confirmed that the brewery’s building, brewhouse, bottling line, foeders, and brand assets will be offered for sale as the company prepares for its final chapter.

Alvinne helped shape the European craft beer movement through innovative brewing techniques, brewer education, craft beer festivals, unique yeast development, and a passionate community of supporters. Despite overcoming economic challenges, energy costs, banking issues, and the pandemic, continuing operations was no longer sustainable.

The brewery will continue selling remaining beer inventory, releasing final barrel-aged beers, and participating in select beer festivals while supplies last. Fans are encouraged to support the brewery during its farewell period and celebrate the remarkable legacy of one of Belgium’s most respected craft breweries.

About Brouwerij Alvinne

Brouwerij Alvinne is one of the most respected names in the Belgian craft beer industry and has long been recognized for producing world-class wild ales, sour beers, barrel-aged beers, and specialty craft beer releases. Located in Zwevegem, Belgium, the brewery spent more than two decades developing a reputation for innovation, creativity, and a relentless commitment to unique fermentation techniques.

From its earliest days, Brouwerij Alvinne distinguished itself from traditional Belgian breweries through experimentation and a willingness to embrace unconventional brewing methods. The brewery became especially famous for cultivating and utilizing its own proprietary house yeast culture, a signature element that contributed to the distinctive character found throughout the Alvinne beer portfolio. This commitment to yeast-driven flavor development helped make Alvinne a favorite among craft beer enthusiasts seeking complex and memorable beers.

Throughout its history, Brouwerij Alvinne produced an impressive range of sour beers, mixed fermentation beers, wild ales, fruit beers, barrel-aged beers, and limited-edition releases. Many of the brewery’s beers gained international recognition for their balanced acidity, nuanced flavors, and innovative use of fruit, oak, and fermentation science. Beer lovers around the world often sought out Alvinne releases for their uniqueness and collectability.

Beyond brewing, Brouwerij Alvinne played a major role in the growth of the European craft beer movement. The brewery helped educate brewers, supported beer culture events, and fostered strong relationships within the international craft beer community. Its Fellowship program created a dedicated network of supporters who shared a passion for artisan brewing, rare beer releases, and Belgian beer culture.

Alvinne’s influence extended well beyond Belgium. The brewery earned recognition in global craft beer circles and became known as a destination for beer tourism, attracting visitors interested in barrel aging, wild fermentation, and innovative brewing practices. Its beers appeared in specialty shops, beer festivals, and tasting events throughout Europe and beyond.

The story of Brouwerij Alvinne is ultimately one of passion, innovation, and dedication to craft beer excellence. Even with the brewery’s closure, its legacy will remain firmly embedded in the history of Belgian craft brewing. Brewers, collectors, and beer enthusiasts will continue to remember Alvinne for its groundbreaking approach to fermentation, its exceptional sour and wild beers, and its significant contributions to modern craft beer culture. As one of Belgium’s most influential independent breweries, Brouwerij Alvinne leaves behind a lasting legacy that will continue inspiring future generations of brewers and craft beer fans.
