Today brings exciting news from Firestone Walker Barrelworks in Buellton, California, as the renowned wild ale and barrel‑aging program prepares to introduce a brand‑new fruited sour release. The upcoming beer is Primal Elements Blackberry & Pomegranate, a carefully crafted oak‑aged sour ale brewed with blackberry, pomegranate, and monk fruit, showcasing the brewery’s continued commitment to complex flavor development and innovative blending.

Primal Elements highlights the signature Barrelworks approach, combining mixed fermentation, fruit layering, and extended oak aging to create a beer that is both vibrant and nuanced. The use of blackberry and pomegranate points toward a bold, fruit‑forward profile, delivering deep berry character, bright acidity, and subtle tannic structure, while the addition of monk fruit adds a unique dimension that enhances perceived sweetness without overwhelming the beer’s natural balance.

Aged in oak barrels, this sour ale is expected to develop added depth, soft vanilla undertones, and a rounded mouthfeel that complements its tart, fruit‑driven core. Barrel aging also brings gentle oak complexity and helps integrate the fruit flavors with the base beer, creating a cohesive and layered drinking experience typical of Firestone Walker Barrelworks releases.

The beer will land at a moderate and approachable 6% ABV, situating it comfortably within the modern sour ale space where drinkability and complexity intersect. This level of alcohol allows the beer to remain sessionable while still delivering the richness and structure expected from a barrel‑aged sour.

Packaging for Primal Elements comes in 16‑ounce cans, continuing the recent trend of Barrelworks offerings moving into more accessible, consumer‑friendly formats. This format not only makes the beer easier to share and enjoy casually but also reflects the growing demand for premium craft sour ales in cans rather than traditional bottles.

As with many Firestone Walker Barrelworks releases, full distribution details, release timing, and official tasting notes are still pending, but anticipation is already building among fans of barrel‑aged sour beer, fruited wild ales, and California craft brewing innovation. Given the brewery’s track record, Primal Elements is positioned to stand out as a high‑quality, fruit‑driven sour ale with balanced acidity, layered fruit expression, and refined barrel character.

Stay tuned for more updates as Firestone Walker Barrelworks Primal Elements Oak‑Aged Sour Ale approaches its official release, bringing another compelling addition to the ever‑expanding world of modern American sour beer and barrel‑aged craft brewing.

Born in a humble shed on the back-forty of the family vineyard, Firestone Walker is a California beer company like no other—founded by two brothers-in-law who simply wanted to make the perfect beer.

The story begins with Adam Firestone (a.k.a. The Bear) and David Walker (a.k.a. The Lion) debating the subject of beer. Their search for a decent local ale proved futile, and it wasn’t long before they had goaded themselves into brewing their own.
Their initial brewing efforts were made in a second-hand brewhouse with converted winemaking equipment—mostly with mixed results. But the hook was set when their first recipe for Double Barrel Ale was attempted.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of that moment. Join us as we look back at the curious, passionate and, at times, precarious path that led us from there to here.

The Brewmaster
Matt Brynildson
When Adam and David moved their brewing operations to Paso Robles in 2001, they also landed “the perfect brewmaster at the perfect time.” Matt Brynildson has worked his magic at Firestone Walker ever since, earning the nickname “Merlin” on his way to becoming renowned as one of the world’s leading brewmasters.

California Brewing Company
California has been our home since we started in 1996. We live and brew here, and we draw energy from the communities that surround us.
Our beers are available nationwide, yet they always reflect where they come from—a land where creativity and innovation are the rule. This is what it means to us to be a California beer company.

Craft & Quality
At Firestone Walker, Beer Before Glory is our mantra for reminding ourselves we do what we do because of the beer. Period. It’s our battle cry to never accept well enough. It’s the high aim for a perfect beer we will never make. Beer Before Glory is our craft, ever honed on the stone of humility.
