Ahead of a winter that will see higher temperatures and less snowfall throughout most of the U.S., according to the latest forecast from the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the personal-finance company WalletHub today released its 2025’s Best Winter Holiday Destinations report, as well as expert commentary, to supplement its money-saving selection of the Best Travel Credit Cards.

Focusing on cost and convenience rather than scenic beauty, WalletHub compared nearly 70 of the largest U.S. metro areas grouped by warm and cold weather. Each destination was analyzed based on 37 key metrics, primarily the expense and hassle of traveling to each location but also on other indicators, such as weather forecasts, safety and variety of activities.

Here’s a quick glimpse at some of the report’s most interesting findings:

Planning a Winter Getaway in Austin-Round Rock-Georgetown (1=Best; 19=Avg.):Overall rank for Austin: 3rd
2nd – Travel Costs & Hassles
10th – Local Costs
9th – Attractions
6th – Weather
13th – Activities
19th – Safety

Key takeaways and WalletHub commentary are included below in text

“Whether you love to have a chill in your bones during the winter travel season or prefer to escape to somewhere sunny, the top travel destinations can cost as little as $200-$300 to reach by plane from major U.S. cities, with no connections. In addition to being affordable, the top cities also have an abundance of attractions that fit their weather patterns, along with high-quality restaurants and relatively low crime rates.”
–
“The top cold-weather winter travel destination of 2025 is the Chicago metro area, while Atlanta is the runner-up. The top warm-weather winter travel destination of 2025 is the Las Vegas metro area, with San Diego as the runner-up.”

– Chip Lupo, WalletHub Analyst

Expert Commentary

What is the outlook for the winter travel season?

“I am optimistic that the 2025 winter travel season will be at least stable, compared to the 2024 winter travel season. I am cautiously optimistic the 2025 winter travel season will grow slightly from the 2024 one, even modestly if we have a normal winter with a decent amount of snow in the northern parts of the country… I have to say the economic factors that might affect winter travel are the usual suspects – general feelings of uncertainty (i.e., consumer sentiment isn’t the brightest right now) and inflation (perceived and real). Even if policies do not have a direct impact on travel cost, when consumers believe there is a need to tighten the belt, discretionary spending like leisure travel could take a hit, although consumer research has shown that people continue to prioritize travel (experience over goods).”
Xinyi Qian – Tourism Center Director & Extension State Specialist, University of Minnesota

“I believe that winter travel may be somewhat muted. General economic uncertainties have the potential to ‘motivate’ travelers to closely scrutinize their travel plans in light of their travel budgets. This may present itself in shorter lengths of stay, less extravagant accommodations, or regional excursions. There is also the possibility of modified staycations, which can positively impact most aspects of holiday travel, absent lodging and possibly transportation.”
Peter Anderson – Lecturer, California State Polytechnic University, Pomona

What are the best ways for travelers to save money?

“There are several ways for travelers to save money without limiting their range of experiences. Some of the most effective cost-saving strategies I use include seeking out free or discounted activities such as walking tours, midweek specials, or combined ticket experiences. From the start, using online platforms and bundling options, like flights, accommodations, and activities, can also lead to savings. Do not underestimate the value of immersing yourself in the local food scene, but balance it by preparing some meals yourself and visiting local markets or neighborhood restaurants that are often off the tourist path. Finally, pack light to avoid extra fees, bring only the essentials, and always book in advance to secure the best rates.”
Dr. Noel Criscione-Naylor, CED – Professor; Program Chair, Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management, Stockton University

“I’ve always seen the value in booking early and being flexible with your travel dates. Combining these two factors can enable travelers to maximize their cost savings, obtain upgrades, and/or garner a variety of perks. Another way to reduce costs for travelers is to join/participate in loyalty reward programs. Whether airline, hotel, or credit card, many loyalty programs offer alerts with member notifications about flash sales, bonus point offers, and other special offers.”
Robert J. Thompson, Ph.D., CHA, TMP – Associate Professor; Dean of Business Administration, William Carey University

What are some logistical do’s and don’ts for winter travel?

“Planning ahead is essential for any trip and key to maximizing your enjoyment. I always recommend purchasing travel insurance. Even with warmer weather anticipated, unpredictable conditions can still disrupt your plans, so it is worth protecting your experience and allowing some flexibility for flight or transportation delays. Building in extra time helps you avoid the stress of unforeseen issues like traffic or schedule changes. Depending on your destination, make sure your technology is ready; download airline, location, and experience apps so all your details are at your fingertips. Still, it is smart to print out a copy of your plans as a backup. Lastly, I always like to carry a balanced mix of cash and digital payment options for convenience and security.”
Dr. Noel Criscione-Naylor, CED – Professor; Program Chair, Hospitality, Tourism and Event Management, Stockton University

“When it comes to winter holiday travel, I would say preparation is key! Book your flights, accommodations, and rental car (if not using Uber, etc.) early to lock in the best rates, and always check cancellation policies just in case plans change. If flying, dress appropriately and pack smart. Keep essentials in a carry-on should you encounter delayed or lost luggage. Keep a close eye on weather forecasts and allow extra time for potential delays – especially at airports, where staffing shortages can add unexpected wait times. If you are driving, I would recommend leaving early in the morning, to avoid traffic. Weather is also a key component to consider when traveling. In warmer climates afternoon weather issues can often cause delays, while travel in cold conditions can make travel a challenge. Staying abreast of weather conditions is a must before and during travel. Budget wisely for meals, gifts, souvenirs, and attractions, and confirm that your destinations will not have extensive business closures during the holidays. You want to maximize the experience of your destination.”
Robert J. Thompson, Ph.D., CHA, TMP – Associate Professor; Dean of Business Administration, William Carey University
