Almanac Beer Company, founded in 2010 by Jesse Friedman and Damian Fagan, is a brewery based in Alameda, California. They specialize in seasonal artisan ales and are known for their “Farm to Barrel” brewing method, which emphasizes using local, seasonal ingredients, especially fruits, sourced from Northern California farms. The brewery’s name is a nod to the Farmer’s Almanac, a guide used by farmers for centuries, reflecting their commitment to agriculture and local sourcing.

Farm to Barrel Approach: They prioritize using ingredients from local family farms, showcasing the terroir of California agriculture in their beers. They partner with farms like Blossom Bluff Orchards, Sierra Cascade Blueberry Farm, and Hops-Meister Farm.

Specialty in Oak-Aged Sours and Farmhouse Ales: While they brew a variety of styles, Almanac is particularly recognized for its oak-aged sours and farmhouse ales.

Diverse Beer Portfolio: Beyond sours and farmhouse ales, they also brew IPAs (including hazy and West Coast styles), lagers, and pilsners. Some of their popular beers include LOVE Hazy IPA, True Kölsch, and their various Sournova series.

Collaborations: Almanac frequently collaborates with other breweries, creating unique and innovative beers.

Taprooms and Production Facility: They have a 30,000 square foot production facility and taproom on the former Alameda Point Naval Airbase, along with a taproom in San Francisco’s Mission District.

Awards and Recognition: Their beers have received accolades, including being a San Francisco Bay Guardian Best of the Bay pick and having Farmer’s Reserve No. 4 named a Draft Magazine top 25 beer. Several of their beers have also won Good Food Awards.

Community Involvement: Almanac is involved in various charitable causes, particularly around their Love Hazy IPA, their number-one-selling beer. They’ve partnered with organizations like the Oakland LGBTQ+ Community Center, donating a portion of the proceeds from this beer to support their work.
