Susquehanna Brewing Co–Coming Soon to Pittston, PA

In the last 2 days, mybeerbuzz.com has broken the news of not one, not two, not three but four new breweries heading into PA….so why stop there!?  I’m very excited to be the very first to report news of a new brewery heading into Northeastern PA. 

Plans are currently underway for a new brewery to be named Susquehanna Brewing Co LLC, in Pittston, PA (Jenkins Twp).  The new brewery will be located in the former United Beverage of NEPA buildings at 653 S Main St in Pittston (just off the southern end of the Pittston Bypass).  The facility currently encompasses two large buildings and extensive parking. 

United Beverage was one of NEPA three largest wholesale distributors prior to selling the Miller/Coors distribution rights to LT Verastro, the Yuengling rights to Northeast Eagle and the Pabst, Straub & Genesee rights to Banko Beverage. 

United Beverage co-owners Ed Maier and Mark Nobile closed the doors in Sept 2010 on the distributorship, but I’m excited to report that another co-owner of the company Fred Maier &f John Maier are now well on their way to opening the Susquehanna Brewing Co in the former United Beverage facilities.

There are lots of rumors flying around about the brewmaster selection for Susquehanna Brewing Co (NO so far it’s not me!) but I’m hearing the brewmaster for this new venture will be chosen in the future.  It’s my understanding the BrauKon designed brewing system is well underway and the guys are working toward

an opening date in Sept.  Word is SBC will be specializing in German-style lagers with some other special brews to follow in the future.  No word yet on a brew-pub, but with the real-estate available, I’d say it’s very likely.

Historically this is very exciting for our area as well.  Turns out Fred Maier’s great-great-great-grandfather was none other than Charles Stegmaier who founded our beloved Stegmaier Brewery in Wilkes-Barre in 1857.  The name Susquehanna Brewing Co also has historical roots with a nod to the former Susquehanna Brewing Co (controlled by Stegmaier Brewery) in Nanticoke PA in the early 1900’s (as you can see from my title graphic).

Label design, logo and their FaceBook page are all on the way so stay tuned for more details to follow.  This has been an amazing week for craft beer lovers in PA and I can’t wait to try out a Susquehanna Brewing beer.
