Flying Dog “Swallow The Truth” Campaign Backfires

Flying dog is releasing a new Imperial IPA called The Truth. The beer will be accompanied by a very tongue-and-cheek advertising campaign called “Swallow The Truth.”  As part of that campaign, Flying Dog posted the above graphic to their Facebook page that simply said “This beer was not brewed at our Asheville brewery, because we don’t have one.”  This was immediately followed by NC Magazine’s headline stating that “Flying Dog Beer Slams Sierra Nevada and other NC Breweries.”  Regardless  of the fact that they had clearly missed the humor, Flying Dog removed the post and added the following:

We are releasing a new Imperial IPA called The Truth.

What appealed to us about this concept of the truth is that as a society, we are constantly blasted with hype, lies, and exaggerations. And we’re expected to swallow it as the truth.
What we learned today is that an inarguable truth was reacted to in very subjective ways.
