Karl Ockert Joins Deschutes Brewery as Director of Brewery Operations

“Karl’s extensive experience in the craft industry and his incredible technical expertise will help us through a critical growth phase as we look to expand production and bring on a second brewery,” said Michael LaLonde, president of Deschutes Brewery. “He’s a great cultural fit for our team as a whole and we look forward to his guidance and input as we continue to grow.”

Ockert was the original brewmaster for Bridgeport Brewing Company in the 1980s, and after stints at some other breweries (small and large), he returned there in the mid-90s as brewmaster and general manager. Prior to joining the Deschutes team, Ockert was with the MBAA as well as running his own consulting business assisting brewing clients in project planning, process and efficiency optimization and troubleshooting for production issues. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Fermentation Sciences from the University of California at Davis and has also directed several advanced learning courses for the MBAA. He is the editor/author of several books and papers on topics ranging from practical brewing basics to the technical aspects of brewing and packaging.

Ockert officially joins Deschutes Brewery on August 3 and will be based out of the company’s headquarters in Bend, Oregon.
