Celebrate Prohibition Repeal Day at Angel City Brewery 12/5

Los Angeles, CA (November 16, 2015) — Raise a glass, ring the bells and wave a flag – it’s the 82nd anniversary of the Repeal of the Prohibition Act. Celebrating in period appropriate speakeasy-style, Angel City Brewery invites Angelenos (most of whom have no recollection of those dark, lonely and very dry days) to toast to the end of drinking in the dark.
On December 5, the brewery will host a private speakeasy up in the Mezzanine Lounge – but like the old days, entry is restricted to those in the know. A password will be revealed on Angel City’s Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter in the days leading up toDecember 5. The Speakeasy Lounge will have a specialty flight bar featuring barrel aged and cellared beers, as well as samples of Angel City’s Sparkling Berliner-Weisse, a twist on the brewery’s regular Berliner-Weisse. This specialty beer, only made at the holidays, is blended with Chardonnay and Viognier grape must, then fermented with a house strain of Belgian yeast and pushed to the limit of carbonation. Flapper dresses and fedoras, suspenders and sequins – jazz-age fashion is encouraged.
December 5, 1933 marked the Repeal of the Prohibition Act. For 13 years, alcohol was outlawed. But in Los Angeles, like much of the country, the law that sought to “cure society of its ills” launched more mayhem than modesty. Civil disobedience, organized crime and even, ironically, drinking increased. If Prohibition sought to shut down the party, times actually got a lot wilder.
But still, it wasn’t all doom and gloom – good old American ingenuity saw to that. Prohibition gave Los Angeles eleven miles of underground tunnels connecting a circuit of basement bars – AKA speakeasies, while the Mayor’s office above ran the city’s alcohol supply. The name speakeasy was cooked up because patrons of these secret spots were supposed to “speak easy” when uttering the entry word. But no need to hold the tongue when raising a glass on December 5. Say it loud and proud – America’s least popular experiment failed and we are free to celebrate! It’s the patriotic thing to do.
Angel City Brewery brews beer for the greater LA area at their Downtown based brewery in the Arts District. The brewery features a 19-tap bar and serves an ever-changing roster of newly inspired beer and classic fan favorites, including Angel City IPA and Angel City Pilsner. The Public House is open Monday-Wednesday, 4:00pm – 10:00pm, Thursday and Friday 4:00pm – 12am,Saturday 12:00pm – 12:00am, and Sunday 12:00pm – 10:00pm. Angel City is also available in 6-packs and on draft at locations throughout the greater LA area and Las Vegas.
