Countdown to Darkness Day

It all started over a decade ago, on a cold November morning in an out-of-the-way Brooklyn Center office park. Thirteen years later, it’s a weekend-long celebration of Darkness, and it’s all taking place in Somerset, Wisconsin in a mere TWO WEEKS.
This email serves as a guide to Darkness Day weekend, especially for those waiting to make sure they can weasel out of their cousin Lyle’s wedding and party with us (dammit, Lyle). In addition to the email and social media updates we’ll be sending over the next few weeks, you can also text DDAY to 59925 to receive text updates throughout Darkness Day weekend, including cask tapping times, band set times, and other special surprises that may or may not involve Omar roving the campsite with beer from his cellar. Where’d he get the golf cart from? Honestly it’s better not to ask.
You can also use this text platform to ask us questions, like:

  • Where are the bathrooms?
  • What time does the shuttle leave?

  • Where is Bill’s watch?

And so forth. We’ll do our best to answer those and any other questions in real time.

2019 SURLY DARKNESS VARIANTS

If you purchase a variant package, you’ll be able to pick up those three (3) bottles along with your three (3) Darkness bottles on Saturday morning between 11am-6pm. Reminder that you we can legally only allow you to pick up your bottles in Somerset on Saturday. Wisconsin doesn’t have a lot of liquor laws, but that is one of them.
Didn’t buy a bottle package? If (and this is a very big IF) any variant bottles remain, we’ll send a text message to the DDAY list above letting you know when and where. All three variants will be available on draught during Saturday’s Darkness Day celebration as well.
For more details about the variants (Old Fashioned, Double Stuffed, Molé), click here. If you’d like to upgrade your current ticket package to a variant package, or purchase another one, click here.

2019 EXCLUSIVE SURLY CAMPGROUND BEERS

For the first time in Darkness Day history, we’ve created three (3) exclusive beers that will ONLY be available for purchase on-site at Somerset.

  • At The End Of The Internet. A double dry-hopped, hazy double IPA brewed with El Dorado, Simcoe, and Citra hops. 10% ABV.

  • Campground Beer. A straight-up, easy-drinking pilsner. 5.2% ABV.

  • None More Black. An imperial kettle sour brewed with black currants and blackberries. 9.4% ABV.

Think of these like a Spring Break souvenir, only they’re so much better than a shot glass with a frog on it and your name misspelled.
For more information about the campground beers, click here.

2019 CASKS, VINTAGE SURLY BEERS

We’re opening up the vaults, experimenting with flavors, and bringing a frankly unreasonable amount of favorites and rarities to Darkness Day. To see the entire list (2008 Darkness! Blood Orange Axe Man! A hundred damn other things!), click here. Grab a seat, it’ll take awhile.

2019 SURLY DARKNESS

Of course, you can’t have Darkness Day without Darkness. We present the 2019 edition of our infamous Russian imperial stout, featuring original art from Darkness Featured Artist Tim Chapman. Is it an occult summoning ceremony gone horribly wrong? An interstellar enforcer claiming its due? One of those gamma ray situations? Whatever the cause, this six-limbed savage is on the rampage and wreaking havoc upon our Minneapolis brewery. Fortunately, our stockpile of Darkness is safe from harm.
2019 Darkness bottles will be available for purchase with no limit to any/all attendees on Saturday between 11am-6pm. After this, they go on sale to the general public on Halloween.

GUEST BREWERY POURING LIST

On Friday, September 27th, we celebrate the inaugural Dawn of Darkness Beer Festival. 23 breweries from across the country, all of whom are otherwise unavailable in Minnesota or western Wisconsin, are bringing beers for attendees to sample from 6-9 pm. The final roll call:

  • Aslin

  • Brickstone

  • Burial

  • Casa Agria

  • Casey

  • Champion

  • Culmination

  • Ecliptic

  • Great Notion

  • Hailstorm

  • Hops & Grain

  • Mikerphone

  • Other Half

  • Outer Range

  • Phase Three

  • Southern Grist

  • Sun King

  • Superstition Meadery

  • Taxman

  • The Rare Barrel

  • Three Weavers

  • Wiley Roots

  • Wren House

They’ll be bringing everything from stouts to sours to Shower Beer (no, really, that’s the name of one of them). For the current beer menu, click here.

Darkness Day Music

Lineups and set times for Saturday’s Darkness Day concert are set, headlined by Eyehategod and featuring an array of facemelting metal, snarling punk, and more.
