About Corona:
Corona is a popular Mexican lager brewed by the company Grupo Modelo since 1925, known for its clear glass bottle and association with a relaxed, beach-oriented lifestyle. Its brewing process involves malting barley, creating a wort, and fermenting it with yeast before carbonating and bottling. In the United States, Constellation Brands is the exclusive licensee and producer, having introduced it to the U.S. market in 1979, where it became a top imported beer.
Brewing process
Ingredients: The process starts with a special variety of malting barley, hops, water, and yeast.
Malting: The barley is cleaned, soaked, germinated, and then dried in ovens to create malted grain.
Mashing: The ground malt is mixed with hot water to create a sugary liquid called wort.
Boiling: The wort is boiled for about an hour with hops to add bitterness and flavor.
Fermentation: Yeast is added to the cooled wort, which ferments the sugars into alcohol and carbon dioxide over about a week.
Maturation: The young beer is matured at a low temperature for several days to stabilize its flavor.
Bottling: The beer is carbonated, filtered, and bottled on automated lines.
Brand and marketing
Origin: Corona was first brewed by Cervecería Modelo in Mexico City in 1925.
Clear bottle: It was the first beer to be sold in a clear glass bottle to showcase its quality and golden color.
U.S. market: It was officially introduced in the U.S. in 1979 and quickly became a popular imported beer.
Lifestyle branding: The brand is strongly associated with a carefree lifestyle, the beach, and outdoor activities, often accompanied by a lime wedge.
Product expansion: Products like Corona Light and Corona Premier have been introduced to cater to different consumer preferences.
Ownership and distribution
Global ownership: The brand is now owned by Anheuser-Busch InBev, but it continues to have its roots in Mexico.
U.S. distribution: Constellation Brands holds the exclusive rights to produce and sell Corona in the U.S. market.
Corona beer’s international expansion began in the South and Southwestern regions of the US — with American tourists returning from Mexico bringing a taste for the beer they’d enjoyed on the sunny beaches of Acapulco and Puerto Vallarta home with them.
In 1979, Corona Extra was introduced in the U.S. and quickly became synonymous with the American beach and barbecue lifestyle.
In the late ‘80s, people started asking for a more calorie-conscious beer that didn’t skimp on taste — and we listened. Corona Light was introduced to U.S. customers in 1989, and you probably know the rest.
Recently, we’ve added a few new drinks to kick back with, to give more choices for everyone who wants to be transported to la playa. We started with Corona Premier, our lower-carb, lower-calorie*, and smoother-taste option.
*Compared to 12 fl. oz. serving Corona Extra: 148 calories, Carbs 13.9 grams, Protein 1.2 grams, Fat 0.0 grams.
From there, we debuted Corona Sunbrew Citrus Cerveza, our refreshingly flavorful take on traditional Mexican beer. Of course, our story doesn’t end here — we’re just getting started.
