About Bully Boy Distillers:
Bully Boy Distillers is Boston’s first craft distillery since Prohibition, founded by brothers Will and Dave Willis in 2010. Located in Boston’s Newmarket District, the company’s family history and New England farming roots inspire its unique lineup of craft spirits, which are produced using traditional techniques.
Company story
Bully Boy Distillers
was inspired by the Willis brothers’ childhood on Charlescote Farm, a fourth-generation family farm.
Family history: The distillery’s name comes from a draft horse that worked on the farm in the 1920s. The family’s great-grandfather, who was a college friend of Teddy Roosevelt, named the horse “Bully Boy” after Roosevelt’s favorite exclamation, “Bully!”.
Prohibition inspiration: In the farmhouse basement, the brothers discovered a hidden vault of spirits amassed by their grandfather during Prohibition. This collection of vintage bottles, including pre-Prohibition whiskies and rums, inspired them to begin their own distilling journey.
From hobbyists to distillers: The Willis brothers began by making apple cider, which progressed to hard cider and eventually apple brandy. Their success as hobbyists led them to turn their passion into a business.
Products and services
Bully Boy Distillers hand-produces a wide range of spirits in small batches.
Spirits: The product line includes whiskey, gin, rum, vodka, and amaro. The distillery also offers innovative spirits like its Experimental Series of bourbons, which feature unique mash bills and aging techniques.
Canned cocktails: They also produce a line of pre-mixed, bottled, and canned cocktails, such as a bottled Old Fashioned.
Bar and tours: The Boston facility features a full cocktail bar and offers guided distillery tours, which include tastings and an inside look at their production process.
Production and ingredients
The company emphasizes traditional techniques and high-quality ingredients.
Local ingredients: They source ingredients, like corn for some of their spirits, directly from their family’s Charlescote Farm.
Custom distillation: Some of their products, such as their Merchant Gin, are the result of extensive experimentation with different botanicals and recipes.
Aging process: Their whiskeys and rums are aged in barrels, sometimes utilizing a heat-cycled environment to achieve specific flavor profiles.
Location and atmosphere
Located at 44 Cedric Street in Boston, the distillery has a low-key, industrial setting. The atmosphere is often described by visitors as “fresh and chill,” with a focus on creative cocktails and the quality of their spirits.
