AleSmith Speedway Stout Mexican Chocolate and Jamaica Blue Mountain

AleSmith Brewing Company in San Diego, California, is preparing two Speedway Stout special releases, bringing a new Mexican Chocolate variation and the returning Jamaica Blue Mountain edition into its celebrated imperial stout lineup. Both beers retain the familiar 12% ABV of the original Speedway Stout, both feature coffee, and both will arrive in 16-ounce cans.

Two serious stouts here.

AleSmith Speedway Stout Mexican Chocolate takes the brewery’s classic coffee imperial stout in a warmer, spice-driven direction, combining cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla, ancho chile and Mexican Chiapas coffee. The result, at least based on the ingredients and packaging description, promises a combination of chocolate, coffee and warming spice that should appeal to drinkers who enjoy Mexican chocolate-inspired imperial stouts without abandoning the rich character that made Speedway Stout such a recognizable beer.

The new AleSmith Speedway Stout Mexican Chocolate is labeled as a special release, with a red-and-black checkerboard design, the familiar Speedway Stout racing imagery and a prominent Mexican Chocolate designation. At 12% ABV, this isn’t a scaled-back version of the original recipe. AleSmith is maintaining the imperial stout’s established strength while introducing a different combination of ingredients intended to complement its roasted malt foundation.

Coffee plays an important role in both releases, although AleSmith is approaching that ingredient from two different directions.

In Mexican Chocolate Speedway Stout, Mexican Chiapas coffee joins cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla and ancho chile, creating a recipe built around overlapping chocolate, coffee and spice characteristics. The label describes rich coffee and chocolate notes complemented by warming spice and smooth vanilla, finishing with a deep, complex character.

A different coffee experience.

AleSmith Speedway Stout Jamaica Blue Mountain returns as another 12% ABV special release, this time placing Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee at the center of the recipe. This returning imperial stout focuses on the relationship between roasted coffee, dark chocolate and the original Speedway Stout’s established chocolate and caramel characteristics.

Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee is widely recognized for its smooth character and balanced flavor profile, making it an interesting addition to an imperial stout that already carries considerable roasted malt intensity. According to AleSmith’s packaging, the coffee complements the beer’s chocolate and caramel character, creating a full-bodied profile with layers of dark chocolate, roast and a smooth finish.

For longtime Speedway Stout drinkers, the return of Jamaica Blue Mountain offers another opportunity to revisit a coffee-focused variation of one of AleSmith’s signature beers. Rather than adding several competing ingredients, this edition keeps its attention on the coffee itself and how its roasted character works alongside the imperial stout base.

Both special releases carry distinctive packaging that makes identifying the two variations straightforward. Mexican Chocolate uses red accents throughout its checkerboard label, while Jamaica Blue Mountain features a blue-and-black design. Each retains the large vertical AleSmith Speedway Stout lettering, crossed racing flags and the brewery’s established branding.

The packaging also recommends serving both beers at approximately 50–55°F in a goblet, allowing their richer coffee, chocolate and roasted malt characteristics to become more apparent as the beer warms.

Mexican Chocolate receives a suggested pairing with churros, while Jamaica Blue Mountain is paired with dark chocolate. Both recommendations make sense given the ingredients and intended flavor profiles.

And the packaging matters. AleSmith is presenting these as individual Speedway Stout special releases rather than simply changing the coffee in its standard imperial stout, giving drinkers two different approaches to the familiar 12% ABV beer.

The Mexican Chocolate variation offers cocoa, spice and Mexican Chiapas coffee, while Jamaica Blue Mountain concentrates on roasted coffee, chocolate and caramel.

Both AleSmith Speedway Stout Mexican Chocolate and Speedway Stout Jamaica Blue Mountain will be packaged in 16-ounce cans. Official release dates, pricing and distribution information have not yet been provided, so stay tuned for additional availability details and tasting notes as AleSmith Brewing prepares these special-release imperial stouts.

AleSmith Brewing Company is an award-winning craft brewery located in San Diego, California, recognized for producing distinctive imperial stouts, West Coast IPAs, traditional European-inspired ales and specialty craft beer releases. Founded in 1995, AleSmith has become one of the established names in American craft brewing, developing a loyal following through its commitment to traditional brewing techniques, carefully selected ingredients and creative variations of its most recognizable beers.

The brewery began in San Diego’s Miramar neighborhood, an area that would eventually become one of Southern California’s most active craft brewing communities. Originally founded by Skip Virgilio and Ted Newcomb, AleSmith was acquired by Peter Zien in 2002. Under Zien’s leadership, AleSmith Brewing Company expanded its production capabilities, strengthened its distribution network and developed an increasingly diverse portfolio of award-winning craft beers.

Among its most recognizable offerings is AleSmith Speedway Stout, a powerful coffee imperial stout that has become synonymous with the brewery. The original Speedway Stout combines roasted malts, chocolate, dark fruit, toffee, caramel and locally roasted coffee, creating a rich, full-bodied beer that balances substantial flavor with a surprisingly smooth drinking experience.

At 12% ABV, Speedway Stout has established itself as a favorite among imperial stout enthusiasts, particularly those interested in coffee-forward dark beers.

AleSmith Speedway Stout special releases

The Speedway Stout series has expanded considerably over the years, with AleSmith introducing numerous specialty variations featuring different coffee origins, chocolate additions, dessert-inspired ingredients and barrel-aging treatments.

These releases allow AleSmith Brewing Company to explore new combinations while maintaining the familiar roasted malt and coffee foundation of its original imperial stout.

AleSmith Speedway Stout Mexican Chocolate continues that approach, combining cocoa, cinnamon, vanilla, ancho chile and Mexican Chiapas coffee in a special-release imperial stout. The recipe draws inspiration from Mexican chocolate traditions, introducing warming spices alongside the familiar chocolate and roasted coffee characteristics associated with Speedway Stout.

AleSmith Speedway Stout Jamaica Blue Mountain takes a different direction, showcasing Jamaica Blue Mountain coffee in a returning specialty release. Its coffee-focused recipe emphasizes roasted character, dark chocolate and caramel, offering another interpretation of the brewery’s signature imperial stout.

Both beers maintain the traditional 12% ABV and feature 16-ounce packaging.

AleSmith Brewing Company’s craft beer portfolio

Although Speedway Stout remains a defining part of the AleSmith identity, the brewery produces numerous other recognizable beers.

AleSmith IPA represents the brewery’s connection to San Diego’s influential West Coast IPA tradition, while Nut Brown Ale reflects its appreciation for classic English brewing styles.

Other established offerings include Horny Devil, Old Numbskull and .394 San Diego Pale Ale.

The latter was developed in collaboration with the family of legendary San Diego Padres player Tony Gwynn, connecting AleSmith Brewing Company with one of the city’s most celebrated sports figures.

This variety has helped AleSmith maintain a broad craft beer portfolio, offering everything from approachable pale ales to substantial imperial stouts and limited-edition specialty releases.

Visiting AleSmith Brewing Company

AleSmith Brewing Company operates its brewery and tasting room at 9990 AleSmith Court in San Diego, California.

The Miramar facility provides visitors with opportunities to experience the brewery’s established beers, seasonal offerings and specialty releases directly from their source.

Its tasting room has become a destination for San Diego craft beer enthusiasts, offering rotating beer selections, food trucks, special events and access to brewery-exclusive releases.

The facility also houses the Tony Gwynn Museum, honoring the Hall of Fame baseball player and his lasting connection to San Diego.

More than three decades after its founding, AleSmith continues developing its reputation through carefully produced craft beers, specialty collaborations and creative additions to the Speedway Stout family.

The upcoming Mexican Chocolate and returning Jamaica Blue Mountain editions demonstrate the brewery’s continued interest in exploring coffee, chocolate and complementary ingredients through its signature imperial stout.
