Hopworks Pineapple Sour

Hopworks Pineapple Sour is headed to cans, and today we’re getting an early look at another new beer coming from Hopworks Brewery in Portland, Oregon. This upcoming pineapple sour ale combines pineapple and other natural flavors with a sessionable 5.5% ABV, giving sour beer fans something new to watch for as the brewery prepares its latest canned release.

And pineapple sounds good.

The new Hopworks Pineapple Sour will arrive in 12-ounce cans featuring a pretty unmistakable combination of bright yellow, green lettering, pineapple illustrations, and the familiar Hopworks Brewery branding. The packaging certainly isn’t trying to hide what’s inside, and with pineapple appearing prominently across the entire label, it’s clear that this tropical fruit is the main attraction.

A new pineapple sour beer from Hopworks Brewery

According to the packaging, Pineapple Sour is described as a sour ale made with pineapple and other natural flavors. That’s the official description printed on the can, and while it doesn’t give us a complete ingredient breakdown, it does tell us what direction Hopworks Brewery is taking with this upcoming release.

Pineapple makes an interesting addition to sour beer because its natural sweetness and acidity can work alongside the tart character of the underlying beer, potentially creating something refreshing without needing to push the alcohol content particularly high.

Of course, we’ll have to wait until we actually taste Pineapple Sour before making any claims about its sweetness, acidity, aroma, or overall flavor profile.

Still, the combination makes sense.

At 5.5% ABV, Pineapple Sour falls into a comfortable range for drinkers looking for a fruit-forward sour ale that doesn’t carry the heavier alcohol content found in some specialty craft beer releases. That strength also makes the upcoming Hopworks beer an interesting option for warm-weather drinking, backyard gatherings, or anyone who enjoys having a few different sour beers available in the refrigerator.

Hopworks Pineapple Sour can design and packaging

The first thing that caught my attention was the can artwork.

Hopworks Brewery has gone with a bright yellow background covered in pineapple-inspired graphics, oversized green Pineapple Sour lettering, and illustrated pineapples incorporated directly into the beer’s name. The brewery’s familiar black, white, and yellow branding appears above the main artwork, along with its Protect Our Planet messaging.

The label also includes the Certified B Corporation logo, something that connects this new Hopworks Pineapple Sour release to the brewery’s broader environmental and sustainability identity.

The beer information panel confirms the 5.5% alcohol content and identifies the product as a sour ale made with pineapple and other natural flavors. The supplied artwork also carries Hopworks Brewery’s Portland, Oregon identification.

A bright, tropical-looking package that should be easy to recognize when these cans eventually reach store shelves.

What to expect from Pineapple Sour

There are still a few unanswered questions surrounding this new Hopworks Brewery release, including the exact release date, distribution details, and whether Hopworks Pineapple Sour will become a regular offering or appear as a limited release.

The artwork gives us an early look at the planned packaging, but it doesn’t establish when the finished beer will become available.

For pineapple sour beer fans, the combination of tropical fruit, sour ale character, and 5.5% ABV should be enough to put this one on the radar. Pineapple can bring plenty of character to a sour beer, especially when its fruit acidity works with the tartness already present in the base beer, although the final balance will depend on how Hopworks approaches the recipe.

And that first pour.

We’ll also be interested to see how prominently the pineapple comes through, whether the finished beer leans toward a sharper sour profile or something more restrained, and how the other natural flavors contribute to the overall experience.

For now, Hopworks Pineapple Sour is another upcoming canned craft beer worth keeping an eye on from the Portland brewery.

Stay tuned to mybeerbuzz.com for additional Hopworks Pineapple Sour release information, availability updates, and tasting notes once we get an opportunity to try this new pineapple sour ale.

About Hopworks Brewery – Portland, Oregon

Hopworks Brewery is an independent, family-owned craft brewery based in Portland, Oregon, recognized for producing organic craft beer, award-winning IPAs, refreshing lagers, specialty releases, and innovative beers while maintaining a strong commitment to environmental responsibility. Founded by Christian and Brandie Ettinger, Hopworks has built its reputation around the idea that brewing excellent beer and protecting the environment should work together rather than compete with one another.

Originally known as Hopworks Urban Brewery, the Portland craft brewery opened its original Southeast Powell Boulevard brewpub in 2008, bringing together fresh craft beer, locally inspired food, sustainable building practices, and a family-friendly atmosphere. The brewery’s roots go back to 2007, when the Hopworks project began taking shape around Christian Ettinger’s experience in Oregon’s growing craft brewing industry.

Hopworks Brewery and sustainable craft beer

Sustainability has been part of Hopworks Brewery since its earliest days. The brewery incorporates organic ingredients, locally sourced materials, and Salmon-Safe hops into its brewing operations while working to reduce waste and improve resource efficiency.

In 2015, Hopworks became the first Certified B Corporation brewery in the Pacific Northwest. This certification recognizes businesses that meet established standards for environmental performance, social responsibility, accountability, and transparency.

Hopworks also became the world’s first Salmon-Safe Certified brewery, demonstrating its commitment to protecting regional watersheds and supporting agricultural practices that help preserve aquatic ecosystems.

The brewery’s familiar Protect Our Planet message appears throughout its branding and packaging, including the upcoming Hopworks Pineapple Sour cans. That message reflects an operating philosophy that extends beyond simply producing organic craft beer.

Hopworks Brewery beers and brewing operations

Hopworks operates a 20-barrel production brewery in Southeast Portland, where its brewing team produces a broad selection of craft beer for its pubs and distribution.

The Hopworks Brewery portfolio has included popular releases such as Hopworks IPA, Ace of Spades Imperial IPA, Overland IPA, Beer Time Pils, and several specialty and seasonal beers.

Ace of Spades Imperial IPA helped establish Hopworks as a respected name among Pacific Northwest IPA drinkers, earning a gold medal at the 2009 Great American Beer Festival.

Hopworks has also developed a reputation for experimenting with organic ingredients, alternative grains, and collaborative brewing projects. Its work with Patagonia Provisions on Long Root Ale introduced beer drinkers to Kernza, a perennial grain associated with regenerative agriculture.

The upcoming Hopworks Pineapple Sour adds another fruit-focused option to the brewery’s developing selection of packaged craft beers. With pineapple, other natural flavors, and a 5.5% ABV, the new sour ale represents a different drinking experience from the brewery’s familiar hop-forward releases.

Visiting Hopworks Brewery in Portland

Visitors looking to experience Hopworks Brewery firsthand can visit its original Southeast Portland brewpub at 2944 SE Powell Boulevard in Portland, Oregon.

The location combines an operating brewery with a restaurant and gathering space, offering fresh Hopworks beer alongside food in a casual, family-friendly setting. Hopworks also maintains a presence at Portland International Airport, giving travelers another opportunity to enjoy locally brewed Oregon craft beer.

Beyond its brewing operations, Hopworks supports community organizations and continues to incorporate environmental considerations into its purchasing, production, and business decisions.

For craft beer enthusiasts following new Hopworks releases, the brewery remains an interesting part of Portland’s independent brewing community. Its combination of established IPAs, approachable lagers, organic brewing practices, and specialty offerings provides plenty of variety for drinkers interested in exploring Oregon beer.

Whether you’re following the upcoming Hopworks Pineapple Sour release, searching for Hopworks Brewery canned beer, or planning a visit to Portland, the brewery offers a distinctive combination of craft brewing experience and environmental responsibility.
