Clichés aside, the past few years has been a whirlwind of construction and expansion here at the brewery. From bunker tanks to bottling lines to brewers, there’s no time to sit still as we have continually pushed ourselves to bring drinkers around the country the best Belgian style beers we can make. While summer 2011 saw a large expansion which brought us our current packaging area, Quality Control lab, and most importantly our employee break room, we are currently undergoing the largest expansion in the history of Allagash. If you’ve visited the brewery in the last few months it’s been hard to ignore the missing parking lot, the large steel beams and cranes, giant tanks being lifted overhead, and the incessant noise. But by summer this year, it will hopefully all have been worth it! The new 7,000 square foot space will hold our new brewhouse, mill/ grain handling area and a new retail space, all bigger and better.
Coming over from Germany, our new brewhouse was custom built and assembled by BrauKon in Munich, hitting the water in February to travel the ocean and arrive here in March to begin installation. With a brew size of 75 barrels, it is more than double the capacity of our current brew house. Fancy instrumentation, improved extract efficiency, major energy efficiencies/ savings and even a spice dosing system, will allow us more control over the brewing of the beer, and ensure quality and consistency over the final product.
A wall away will also be our new larger Tasting Room and Retail Store. With a nice seating area and a possible outdoor patio, inquisitive beer geeks and casual drinkers alike will be able to stop by to learn more about Allagash beer and maybe take a tour to learn what makes our process unique – secret spices aside. The store will also provide a nice place to get some swag and to pick up any of the available beers that we have.
But as buildings expand, and faces change, our mission will always remain the same: to brew high quality Belgian style beers for dedicated fans and curious consumers. While buttons replace valves, it’s all to ensure that when our beer reaches a glass, from a bottle or a tap, it will be the best beer we could make.
