Most Expensive Baseball Stadium Beers Coming From Boston, St. Louis & New York..Cheapest…

Back in 1958, one could see the Detroit Tigers play ball while enjoying a premium beer and hot dog for 75 cents. In 2013, it costs $11 for the same fare. “Long gone are the days of 40 cent beers,” says Mark Davidson, founder of SaveOnBrew.com – America’s only search engine for retail beer prices. “Yet, we still find it interesting to watch the trends and see which stadiums are most aggressively pricing up their beers.” SaveOnBrew released their 2013 findings earlier today.

This year, the three most expensive MLB stadiums to find beer included the Boston Red Sox’s Fenway Park (60 cents/ounce or $7.25/beer), the St. Louis Cardinal’s Busch Stadium (56 cents/ounce or $6.75/beer), and the New York Giants’ AT&T Park (56 cents/ounce or $6.75/beer).

Last year, the Red Sox, the Cardinals, and the Toronto Blue Jays fans faced the most expensive beer prices. In 2012, the Giants’ stadium only charged 39 cents per ounce of beer, which signals a dramatic increase in price for 2013. They went from serving a 16 ounce beer to a 12 ounce beer, hoping that fans would just assume the price jumped 25 cents and not notice that the glass had also shrank in size.

“I think consumers should at least be aware of the trickery that goes on,” Davidson says. “I mean, at the end of the day, what can we do? Lobby for cheaper beer? Probably not. Our report is more to satisfy the curiosity of the fans and help people budget their alcohol a little better.”

MLB stadiums with the cheapest beer for 2013 include: the Angels’ Stadium of Anaheim (28 cents/ounce or $4.50/beer), the Diamond Backs’ Chase Field (29 cents/ounce or $4/beer), and the Rangers’ Ballpark in Arlington (31 cents/ounce or $5/beer).

While the Giants may have dropped the size of their beer cups, the Angels went the opposite way and boosted the size of their cups – without increasing the price, for a net decrease of 4 cents per ounce. This move took them from having the second-best price on beer in the league last year to the #1 spot this year. The Diamondbacks held steady with the same price as last year for the #2 spot. Last year, the Rockies were in third place with 34 cent per ounce beers; but, this year, they were unseated by the Rangers who dropped the price of beer from 41 cents/ounce down to 31 (or $6.50/beer down to $5).

“I like the idea of enjoying a cheap beer at the ballgame,” says SaveOnBrew’s Jennn Fusion. “However, history has shown that it can get downright sloppy – like in 1973, when the Cleveland Indians’ stadium introduced 10-cent beer night. There was a limit of six beers per patron that wasn’t very well enforced, which resulted in a 9th inning riot and a forfeiting of the entire game!” She adds, “So, perhaps it’s best that some of us stay home with our beers and yell at the TV instead.”
