Madtree Brewing Drops Gnarly Brown & Adds PSA

You’ve probably heard some rumblings and rumors about Gnarly Brown, MadTree’s beloved brown ale, going away. Sadly, the rumors are true.

While we had hoped to communicate this differently and be much more transparent, things haven’t quite aligned to get the story out sooner. Cutting to the chase, Gnarly Brown will be on a hiatus for a bit as we retool the name. The recipe itself remains and we will likely brew it again in the future.

It may not return to cans again but that is still to be determined. However, in its place is PSA, a pale ale, which has been a taproom favorite and an obvious choice to take the place of Gnarly Brown.

PSA is available now on a limited draft basis and cans will be released in early March as it becomes a full-time offering. Fans of Gnarly Brown will still be able to find cans on shelves over the next few months.

As a farewell to Gnarly Brown, there will be a number of Gnarly Gno More events over the next couple of weeks to celebrate this special beer. The MadTree taproom and a number of retailers will have special events tapping small-batch variants of Gnarly Brown, including Bourbon Barrel Aged, Mexican Hot Chocolate, Black Currant, and Coffee and Vanilla Nitro.

“We are really sad to retire the Gnarly Brown name since it has been such an iconic beer for us over the past three years, plus it was one of the first recipes we started honing in our basements before opening,” said MadTree Brewing co-founder, Brady Duncan. “We were already planning to can PSA so this was a natural transition as we figure out long term how the Gnarly Brown recipe shapes up in our portfolio.”

PSA was designed to be just that, a Public Service Announcement that craft beer can be both thoughtful and approachable. You may choose to dissect the variety of citrus, dank, and tropical fruit hop flavors or to simply enjoy the proper balance between malt sweetness and body that PSA delivers. At 4.5% ABV and 30 IBU, this is sure to delight craft beer fans of all persuasions.
